ECIE Laboratory Excels in IFEC 2024 Mid-Term Selection at APEC Conference

The ECIE Laboratory from the National Taipei University of Technology has once again demonstrated its dedication to excellence and innovation at the International Future Energy Challenge (IFEC) 2024. This prestigious event, which was part of the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC), put a spotlight on the theme “Stereo Switch-mode Audio Power Amplifier,” challenging participants to push the boundaries of power electronics technology.

For six months, a group of our determined undergraduate students embarked on a rigorous journey to design a state-of-the-art stereo switch-mode audio power amplifier. Their dedication and hard work culminated in a 20-minute presentation at the APEC conference, where they had the opportunity to showcase the culmination of their efforts. This presentation not only detailed the intricate design processes and the innovative technologies they employed but also demonstrated the students’ deep understanding of the key technical challenges they overcame.

The competition’s requirements were stringent, focusing on:

  • Power Input: 48 V from a specified DC supply
  • Power Output: 135 W per channel, for 3 channels
  • Audio Input: Balanced analog from WAV files

The evaluation criteria emphasized audio quality, including distortion metrics and frequency response, as well as efficiency, weight, and power density. Our students’ design was a testament to their ability to integrate these aspects into a coherent and innovative solution.

Competing against 11 teams from around the globe, our students stood out for their creativity, technical skills, and comprehensive approach to the challenge. These teams represented some of the world’s most prestigious universities, highlighting the competitive nature and the global scale of the IFEC 2024.

This competition was more than a test of technical skill; it was an opportunity for our students to enhance their capabilities in teamwork, problem-solving, and communication. The experience of developing their project from concept to presentation allowed them to apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges, fostering a deeper understanding of their field.

The participation in the IFEC 2024 and the APEC conference has been an invaluable learning experience, enabling our students to connect with the global power electronics community and to gain insights into the latest industry trends and challenges.

We are profoundly grateful to our sponsors, including FSP Group, 3Y Power Technology, National Taipei University of Technology, the Ministry of Education, MPS, and WTG Technology, for their support. Their contributions were crucial in enabling our team to showcase their talents on an international stage.

A heartfelt thank you also to the organizers of the IFEC 2024 and the APEC conference. Their commitment to fostering a platform for innovation and learning has made this enriching experience possible for our students, further solidifying the ECIE Laboratory’s position in the global power electronics research community.
