In this competition, we proposed the idea of using the wide bandgap devices (GaN) to implement a high performance, high power density 500-W digitally controlled PV inverter. In this project, a two-stage grid-connected inverter was proposed for photovoltaic (PV) systems. The proposed system consisted of a three-phase boost converter which tracks the maximum power point of the PV system and a single-phase inverter with an LCL filter to transfer the PV energy to the grid. The ECIE team was awarded the grand prize based on their new innovation and practical ideas.
Preliminary Specifications:
- Input: 48 Vdc nominal from a specified PV panel.
- Output: Vout: 110 Vac; Pout: 500 W.
- The peak efficiency was 98.15%.
