2020 Project Competition at the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, NIU – Excellent Work Award 🏅

2020 Project Competition at the College of Electrical Engineering Department, National Ilan University

Nano Satellite Solar Power System with MPPT using Wide Bandgap Devices

We won the Excellent Work Award!!!!!!

Our team presented the analysis, design, and results of the ECIE nano satellite power system developed by the team at National Ilan University. We covered the analysis of the PV panels, the operation of the system under the different operating modes, and GaN device analysis. The focus of our design was first on high power density and second on efficiency. The simulation results of the full system were tested and the experimental waveforms were presented. Our team’s design was fully functioning and achieved a maximum efficiency of over 95%.

Preliminary Specifications:

  • 2x DC inputs: Max power < 60 W, Max current < 3 A, voltage 20 V
  • 3x DC outputs: 3.3 V @ 5 A, 5 V @ 4 A, and 8 V @ 2600 mAh
  • Functionalities: MPPT control (uniform and non-uniform solar irradiance)
  • Functionalities: Battery charging and discharging
